type='text'>We Are What We Eat! So . . . What Is In Our Food?

I had a chance this past weekend to watch the movie "Food Inc." for the second time. And, let me tell you, it was actually MORE disturbing than the first time I watched it.

For those of you who haven't seen the movie, let me summarize in six words: OUR FOOD IS REALLY SCREWED UP!!

The movie makes the case that our national food supply has been governmentally influenced, corporately manipulated, financially exploited, and irresponsibly marketed to the point that it is, in large part, not fit for human consumption. All parties involved, from the regulators on down to the consumers, have failed in the area of creating a healthy and sustainable food source. And our nation is paying the price of this failure in disease.

One sequence of the movie talks about the average cost per calorie that has been flipped on its head over the last 20 years. You can actually go to a fast-food restaurant and buy a double cheeseburger for less than a buck. You can't buy a head of broccoli for a buck, how can you buy an entire hamburger?

We have completely skewed our food to cheaper "bad calories" in junk food. Much of this problem is tied directly to subsidies that are offered on commodity crops (wheat, corn, soybeans) that are used in nearly EVERYTHING in the supermarket. The subsidies have allowed these commodity crops to be sold below the cost of growing them, and the flood of cheap material has resulted in some very clever new uses of these materials in food. Just think about how many products high fructose corn syrup is in now? Seems like just about everything, right? It is cheap, it is really flexible for use in nearly any type of product, and it is REALLY BAD for our health. I have seen multiple studies that point out this one ingredient as the main contributor to our national obesity epidemic, as well as the skyrocketing rate of adult onset diabetes. Cheap to use. Easy to use. Poison to eat.

It is pretty easy, as an individual, to feel powerless when looking at this giant problem with our food, and at all of the giant entities involved. But the truth is the exact opposite! As consumers, we are incredibly powerful! We get to vote several times each day on which foods we want to put in our bodies. Food that we don't eat can't damage our health. And food that we won't buy will be replaced, eventually, with food that we want to buy.

There are several things that you can do today to build your health, and to send a message that you want healthy foods.

-Supplement your diet with healthy nutrients to avoid deficiencies.
-Detoxify your body quarterly to rid it of harmful toxins.
-Drink plenty of water to hydrate your body.

And, courtesy of the Food, Inc. official website:

-Stop drinking sodas and other sweetened beverages.
-Eat at home instead of eating out.
-Go without meat one day a week.
-Buy organic or sustainable foods with little or no pesticides.
-Protect family farms, and visit your local farmers market.
-Make a point to know where your food comes from - READ LABELS.

My best wishes for a happy, healthy life!

Wallace

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://mliscompany.blogspot.com/2010/02/we-are-what-we-eat-so-what-is-in-our.html' title='We Are What We Eat! We visited a junior high school in Massachusetts to give a seminar to the 7th grade health classes. There were about 75 students in this class and I asked how many of them had someone in their family or someone they knew that had cancer. 100% of the young students raised their hand. If they had been an older generation, I would have asked “how many of you knew someone with cancer before 1950?” I know from other seminars I have done, that not very many who remember the 1950’s knew someone with cancer. What has changed since 1950?

LIFESTYLE!!!

In doing research for my new book, “From Surviving to Thriving” I was gratified to see the new research being done on cancer prevention.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 271px; height: 400px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_3Kp73oviUqY/S2tQihrK9sI/AAAAAAAAAI8/z5sGNmJvL6I/s400/cancer+book+cover+scan+sm.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5434525929437853378" />
According to a World Cancer Research fund study in February 2009, about one third of the twelve most common cancers in high income countries could be prevented through diet, exercise and weight control.
The WCRF has reported that eating a nutritious diet, being physically active and keeping body fat under control may prevent:
• 38% of breast cancers
• 45% of colorectal cancers
• 36% of pancreatic cancers
• 47% of stomach cancers
• 60% or esophageal cancers
• 70% of endometrial cancers
• 63% of cancers of the mouth, pharynx and larynx
• 24% of kidney cancers
• 21% of gallbladder cancers
• 15% of liver cancers
• 11% of prostate cancers

By making relatively straightforward changes, we can significantly reduce the number of cancer cases around the world. And for those who do get cancer, these same lifestyle cancers can help create an environment within the body that is unfriendly to cancer, allowing for a long and productive life. Only the amazing instrument, the body, has the ability to heal itself.

Our goal at the M’Lis Company is to provide the tools to help educate and provide support for a healthy, happy lifestyle.

-Dr. Linda Nelson

Trainings

We have been busy getting ready for our trainings this year! Our July 2009 five day training in Salt Lake City was unique, super fun and very informative. We had many of our Feature accounts attend for the annual feature round table (picture above). Throughout the training, we had some of our top feature accounts talk about how and why their spa and wellness centers are so successful. We also had some fabulous organic live food catered for lunch by Omar’s Rawtopia, Utah’s only raw food restaurant. Omar himself gave an entertaining talk about why raw food is so healing for the mind, body, and spirit. Our trainings provided ample information on Detoxification, Supplementation, Weight Management, Wellness, Candida, Fibromyalgia, Natural Hormone Therapy, Cellulite and Body Contouring, Holistic Skin Care, Marketing, Consultation Training, and Much More. The Salt Lake City trainings are specifically unique in the fact that it is located at our corporate offices where all of our staff is involved in teaching the segments they specialize in. It’s a lot of good information and a ton of fun. There’s even a yoga session included!

Taryn

The Dangers of Fluoride

I love love love the internet and think it is an amazing resource for information. I feel that every individual should have the opportunity to be informed and educated on the topics that interest them most and the internet is perfect for this! Of course you know that at M'lis we are always interested in new ways to help keep our bodies healthy and how to best avoid those things that can contribute to unnecessary disease or suffering. One of my most recent topics of interest is the debate over fluoride and how becoming overexposed can damage our health.

I speak with many people who are suffering with thyroid problems everyday. We know that our thyroid needs iodine to function properly and when we encounter a deficiency of iodine in our diet we can begin to experience increasingly more common thyroid disorders. Interestingly enough, our thyroid searches for this iodine in our body, when there is none to be found it will absorb fluoride and chlorine which most people are exposed to on a regular basis. I enjoyed this short video clip and think that it gave a good visual on what can happen to our bodies including our hormones when we get exposed to these toxins. I hope you enjoy this video, and as always please keep in mind that the M'lis company does not necessarily endorse or agree with everything in this clip.

- Ginny

New Year, New Goals... It's a less-controlled movement of fructose through these pathways that causes it to contribute to greater triglyceride [i.e. fat] synthesis.”

Something that makes avoiding this more difficult for those who are looking to eat healthier is that fructose is in many diet foods and even many health foods!! Thanks to Dr. Mercola for this fabulous information. Below are some dangerous facts about Fructose:

-When you eat 120 calories of glucose, less than one calorie is stored as fat. 120 calories of fructose results in 40 calories being stored as fat. Consuming fructose is essentially consuming fat!

-The metabolism of fructose by your liver creates a long list of waste products and toxins, including a large amount of uric acid, which drives up blood pressure and causes gout.

-Every cell in your body, including your brain, utilizes glucose. Therefore, much of it is “burned up” immediately after you consume it. By contrast, fructose is turned into free fatty acids (FFAs), VLDL (the damaging form of cholesterol), and triglycerides, which get stored as fat.

Now is the time to detoxify, cut out damaging foods (especially fructose) and become the new you!!

We'd love you to share your tips on cutting out fructose from your diet, and also foods that you have found it in! This is an excerpt from a newsletter that he sends his clients reguarly.. Thanks for sharing your wisdom John!

Is your cholesterol too high?
There are a number of reasons that our cholesterol becomes too high. One primary reason is that the thyroid gland which requires iodine in order to produce its required hormones is unable to do so due to the lack of proper iodine levels. These hormones run the energy production of every cell in the body, including those in the liver. The lack of iodine in the diet leads to weak liver function. Your liver not only manufactures the cholesterol needed by the body, but is also charged with breaking down and removal of excessive levels acquired from the diet. Medical professionals say, that it used to be taught, that if cholesterol was elevated, expect thyroid problems to have been the cause. It seems that with the growing reliance on the TSH test for thyroid function plus the advent of statin drugs to actually inhibit the liver’s production of cholesterol, the role of the thyroid in high cholesterol is being dramatically and dangerously overlooked. Today, broadcast television is filled with commercials hawking synthetic chemicals designed by pharmaceutical companies to reduce cholesterol production in the body. These chemicals are known as statin drugs. Studies show that these drugs have adverse side effects on one’s health, including weakening muscle tissues and damaging the liver; the very organ needed to protect us against cholesterol problems. Further, it has recently been reported that these drugs are not even slowing the cholesterol elevation. We, at Alternative Health, have some basic supplementation that will allow the body to naturally control the cholesterol levels in the body. In addition to proper supplementation we must never forget that exercise helps to reduce the bad cholesterol (LDL), while increasing the good (HDL). I suggest making the daily walk into a lifetime habit. Invest 30 minutes each day. Walk briskly, but not breathlessly. Fast enough to get your heart rate up, but not so fast that you couldn’t carry on a conversation. For more information on this very important subject please call or stop in and we can discuss your particular situation. Remember, cholesterol is the silent killer, don’t let it sneak up on you.

Triathlon

Top: Taryn, Wallace, Ginny, Bob. This is why our company has created a work environment that is conducive to exercise by creating a group goal to complete three triathlons this year. It has been a great motivation working together on this goal and we are proud to say that we have completed our first triathlon at the Echo Reservoir – in Summit County, UT !!! Though this was the first triathlon for the majority of us, it was definitely an enjoyable and memorable experience. The M’lis Company recognizes the many benefits of exercise. Some of which are reduced risk of developing many degenerative diseases; to improve body weight and body fat percentage; to maintain healthy muscles, bones, and joints; improve psychological well-being including a reduction in depression and anxiety; as well as enhance work, recreation, and sport performance. We are so excited to continue training for our second triathlon coming up at the end of August.

Stephanie

Wallace

Caroline

Wallace and Taryn

Race For The Cure

On May 10, 2008 employees, family members and friends of The M’lis Company joined 17,000 others in Salt Lake City, Utah for the 12th annual Susan G. In order to help us accomplish this goal, the M’lis team has implemented an exercise schedule. In the past I have found that when I was working out regularly, my workouts eventually became monotonous and I lost interest. My own experience has shown me that when I have a support group, people who share my same goals and enthusiasm, that I have more motivation to stick with the exercise program. Without a support group, after 6 to 12 weeks, interest fades and the doldrums set in. That’s when many of us give up. What’s so frustrating is that many of us quit just when we’re on the verge of success…at both making exercise a habit and seeing significant fat loss. Below are some of the common mistakes that hold us back from reaching our full exercise potential:

Focusing on the scale- Weight loss isn’t going to happen right away. For some folks, it takes months to see significant changes. What we never take in consideration is that our muscles weigh a lot more then fat. When starting a program, it’s best to set measurable goals like getting a certain number of workouts in each week or lifting a certain amount of weight.

Working too hard- Newbies sometimes go at their new workout programs like veteran exercisers. Starting easy and working your way up to more frequent exercise makes your workouts more enjoyable and gives your body time to adjust to exercise.

Not working hard enough- On the other hand, some people don’t take their intensity high enough to promote weight loss results.

Comparing yourself to others- If your friend is losing weight faster than you are, it doesn’t mean something’s wrong with you. We all lose fat at different rates. Try to spend less time comparing yourself to others and focus on your own personal gains.

Giving up too soon- If you’re not seeing results yet, giving up is the last thing you should do. If you’ve been working out consistently, don’t give up, you are on your way to weight loss.

If you continue to stay motivated, not only will it help the appearance of your body but it will help your overall health. Decreasing the risk of heart disease, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, the risk of diabetes, and the risk of osteoporosis are just a few exercise related benefits. Keep going and don’t give up! It’s worth it….

If you would like to participate with the M’lis team in our exercise schedule, we will be posting our weekly exercise goal each Friday.

-Stephanie

Soda Sabotage

We have all heard the hype about how soda can contribute to weight gain. Now you are wondering… what about diet soda? Wouldn’t this be the answer to this calorie problem? It’s not. According to WebMD, when we offer our bodies the sweet taste of diet drinks but give them no calories, our body is alerted to the possibility that there are more calories on their way and it will search for the calories promised but not delivered. We think that we can fool the body but it might retaliate buy wanting more calories. Some soft drink studies suggest that diet drinks actually stimulate appetite. So next time you reach for a Diet Coke think of these statistics…

For diet soda drinkers, the risk of becoming overweight or obese was:

36.6% for up to ½ can each day

37.5% for ½ to one can each day

54.5% for 1 to 2 cans each day

57.1% for more that 2 can each day.

Not to mention the negative effects of aspartame (www.sweetpoison.com) and caffeine have on your body. While dedicating my life to these other priorities, I have neglected my own health. Recently, M'lis challenged us to participate in some mini-triathlons this summer to win a chance to go to Hawaii in 09' to do a triathlon there. So.... here I am. Forced to practice what I teach. The first step to getting well, and increasing stamina is detoxification. To be completely honest, I don't love to detox. So I decided to do additional research (to motivate me) as to why detoxification is so important. Here it is:

"There are a lot of colon related problems today. A neglected bowel holds a high volume of toxic elements. Ideally, food should pass through the mouth, stomach, small intestine, large intestine (i.e. the colon), rectum, and out through the anus in about 11 to 15 hours, but in much of the population, it is taking 26 hours or more. In some constipated individuals, it can take 3 - 5 days. This provides a lot of time for toxins to be diffused into the bloodstream from the decaying fecal matter in the small intestine and colon

Although you may have daily bowel movements, are you sure that 100% of the material your body does not need is coming out? Is it possible that only 99% is eliminated and the rest sticks to your intestines? How long has this been going on? What will this mean to your health in 10 or 20 years from now.

Some health experts say that up to 95% of all sickness and diseases are related to an unclean colon! At the beginning of the 21st century, statistics tell us that one in three females and one in nearly two males, will get cancer. More and more people are dying from Colon cancer than ever before. It now is one of the top three cancers among both men and women. Individually, colon cancer claims the lives of nearly 50,000 people annually and yet most of us still think “it won’t happen to me.”

The intestines can store a vast amount of partially digested, putrefying matter (as well as drugs and other toxic chemicals) for decades. As the slow-moving fecal matter begins to stick to the walls of the small intestine and colon, it starts restricting the flow of waste as it builds up a layer of old feces, mucus, and dead cells. The food particles that you ingest in that layer of encrusted waste begin to ferment and rot and release, while continuing to release poisonous toxins into vital organs, the bloodstream, and the rest of your body. This mass of encrusted decomposing material becomes a breeding ground for an immense number of harmful bacteria, yeast, fungus, mold, and intestinal parasites like amoebae, flukes and worms, which begin to thrive within the body.

Having a build up of toxic material in the colon is unhealthy and leads to many diseases and even weight gain. That’s why it is important to utilize a detoxification program, which cleanses your colon, purifies your vital organs, and works to regulate your digestive system. Detoxification is the process of removing accumulated toxins and waste products that build up within our system.

Detoxification is a great first step to begin any lifestyle change, whether it’s for a specific health concern like high cholesterol, Fibromyalgia, and Candida, or for something more general like weight loss. The benefits are almost immediately felt as energy is improved and wellness returns. "

-Annie

P.S. I have lost 32 lbs and almost 10% body fat in the last 5 months.
